Reinterpreting Johnny Cash's To Do list with wood type
challenged by my professor Kevin Auer to reinterpret a short piece of text using the RRK collection, I chose Johnny Cash’s to-do list from the 1970s. Kevin then selected three characters for me: J, X, and O.
Using these characters from six different typefaces, I printed the original wood type collage in an edition of 50. I then scanned, recomposited it digitally, and reprinted it on the back using photopolymer and silkscreen. 7 × 9"
collage x letterpress x screen print celebrating the women who crafted despite it all!
initially setting out to collage an artifact of art history, I chose a 1968 edition of The Workbasket as a commentary on the massive yet often invisible role of traditionally “domestic” and “feminine” craft within the canon (and within my own practice). However while scanning the material, I became overwhelmed by the misogynistic messaging embedded within what initially felt like a safe, intimate space for women. I collaged selections of these advertisements and printed letterpress with polymer plates.
I then sought to embody the women of this era by adopting their techniques and persistence to re-collage the print. I used traditional weaving methods to create new negatives for additional plates, which were then reprinted. The final layers feature four women of the Bauhaus whose practices deeply inspire me and resonate with the conceptual framework of this piece. Their names are letterpress printed on the back. 6x7"
